Kitty wanders into a bar and witnesses a bar fight between an anti-mutant redneck and a mutant named Logan, who can extend adamantium claws from his knuckles. As Logan leaves, Kitty sneaks into his truck and tries to escape with him, but he catches her. While they argue back and forth about what to do, a massive robot descends from the sky and incinerates Logan's truck. The two are rescued in the nick of time by Ororo Munroe (codenamed Storm) and Scott Summers (codenamed Cyclops), two mutants who can control the weather and possess heat vision respectively. Logan and Kitty are taken to a large aircraft called the X-Jet and flown back to America. The two are brought to a school named Xavier's Institute for Gifted Youngsters and are introduced to the school's founder, Charles Xavier. Xavier offers to take them in, and Kitty agrees, but Logan dismisses the offer and leaves. Not far from the school, Logan is accosted by a feral man, who he recognizes as Victor Creed. The two have a massive battle in the forest, but are eventually stopped by Xavier. Victor, now going by the name Sabretooth, reveals that he has been sent by his boss, Magneto, to set up a meeting with Xavier. Xavier reluctantly agrees, and is joined by Cyclops, Storm, Kitty, and Cyclops' love interest, Jean Grey, as well as Logan, who takes an interest in Jean. The group are led by Sabretooth to an abandoned planetarium, where they meet Magneto. Magneto turns out to be Erik Lensherr, an old friend turned rival of Xavier. Magneto has founded his own faction, called the Brotherhood of Mutants. Storm explains to Logan and Kitty that they once both fought for mutant rights, but Magneto's hatred of humanity overcame him and became more interested in mutant supremacy, while Xavier pursued equality. This led to a falling out and they became bitter rivals. Magneto explains to Xavier that he summoned him in order to discuss the Sentinel problem. The Sentinels are the robots which attacked Logan and Kitty. It turns out that they have been targeting mutants everywhere and Magneto wants to stop them. He also reveals that he has tracked the production of the Sentinels back to Trask Industries, owned by Bolivar Trask, an infamous anti-mutant protester. He thinks that Trask is using the mutant registry to find them, but must be using someone on the inside. The mole is revealed to be Henry Peter Gyrich, a government scientist with access to the list who is also overseeing the Sentinel project in conjunction with Trask. They're most secretive product is the Master Mold, the figurehead for the Sentinels. Meanwhile, Kitty asks Logan about Sabretooth and Logan reveals that they are half brothers, but won't say anything else. Sabretooth later approaches Logan and asks him if he's still bitter; Logan replies that he'll stop the Sentinels, but once the mission is does promises to kill Sabretooth. The two groups descend upon government facility where the Sentinels are being produced. Kitty uses her powers to walk through a wall and open a door, letting them in. A battle ensues as Trask activates the Sentinels, but Magneto tosses them aside using his metal bending powers. Eventually, the Sentinels overwhlem the mutants and traps them, at which point Trask prepares to execute them. However, he opens a storage closet to find Gyrich's dead body inside, revealing that his partner has been assimilated by skin-changed Raven Darkholme, AKA Mystique. Mystique releases Magneto and the other Brotherhood mutants. Magneto reveals to Xavier and the now captive Trask that he plans to use the Sentinels to erase humanity, leaving mutants as the dominant species on Earth, in spite of Xavier's protests. Sabretooth drags Logan outside to kill him himself while Magneto activates Master Mold. Kitty uses her abilities to escape and free Cyclops, who then liberates the others and a fight ensues. Outside, Sabretooth gives Logan a harsh beating, but Logan gets back on his feet and beats Sabretooth mercilessly in retaliation. Logan eventually pins him down and has the chance to kill him, but states that he's better then him and punches him out. He runs back inside as Master Mold is unleashed. Trask, realizing the danger he has put mankind in, at first states he wants to help them, but then mysteriously runs off. The team are mercilessly beaten down by the Sentinels, and al seems lost until Trask returns, piloting the X-Jet, which he loaded with explosives. He crashes it into the control panel, shutting the Sentinels down, except for Master Mold, although he perishes in the process. Cyclops and Logan perform the fastball special, which involves Cyclops throwing Logan into the air, allowing Logan to decapitate Master Mold. Suddenly, Sabretooth charges in and attacks Cyclops, and Jean is also wounded. Kitty tricks Sabretooth and blasts him out of the building. Sabretooth subsequently leaves with the rest of the Brotherhood, with Magneto declaring that the next time they meet it will be as enemies. Logan departs, determined to fulfill his promise and announcing that he won't make the same mistake twice. Kitty officially enrolls in the school and Xavier announces his intention to the group into a task force to counter the threat of the Brotherhood, uder the name of the X-Men.
