This scam persuades players into dropping an item for another. It is like regular trading, except that it involves dropping items to trade instead of using the regular trading system. The player who aims to scam doesn't even drop their item, and instead waits for the other player's item to show up, takes it, and logs out. Most players won't fall for this, even the newer, less experienced ones. This trading method can no longer be performed due to an update by Jagex, who discouraged this trading method in the first place.

If you ever come across someone asking to drop trade an untradeable item refrain from trading with them. Untradeable items disappear before the other player sees it, making one of the players lose their item. Jagex wouldn't make an item untradeable for no reason. Instead, report the player offering to drop trade under Item Scamming. From 7 December 2007 to 31 January 2011, items over 3000gp worth of value would simply disappear without revealing themselves to other players. As of 1 February 2011, this is no longer the case, and scammers can take items of any value after they have been on the ground for a while. Furthermore, all items dropped in the Wilderness will immediately become visible to other players in a tradable form, be it a broken version of the item or an equivalent amount of coins.
