A good Twist Ending is surprising, and seems to come out of left-field. You're shocked at first, but then you look back and realize that that's what they were building to all along. It takes a great writer to pull off believable twists on a regular basis. That doesn't stop less-than-great writers from trying, however. Contrast The Untwist, where the plot twist is ruined by making it so obvious that the audience confuses it for a Red Herring. The Shocking Swerve is a kind of twist made just to have a twist. There's little-to-no rhyme or reason involved, no Foreshadowing, and no way that the viewer could have ever seen it coming. They just pulled it out of nowhere due to a possibly misguided desire to "shock" the viewer. Characters may be derailed, subplots may be ruined, and generally everything that's occurred so far may be thrown out the window, just to pull off this twist. Contrast The Untwist, where the plot twist is ruined by making it so obvious that the audience confuses it for a Red Herring.
