The Honda Civic Type R (EK9) is a hot hatch that was only available for the Japanese domestic market from 1997 and 2000. The Type R is featured with a high number of improvements over regular Civic models such as a seam-welded monocoque and limited-slip differential to improve handling and rigidity. The 1.6 litre engine is equipped with Honda's variable valve timing 'VTEC'. The Type R received a minor facelift in 1999.
