| - Shadowspawn is a generic term for creatures of the Dark One. The Aiel use the term Shadowwrought instead. Different varieties often have very little in common with each other except that nearly all of them will instantly die if they attempt to pass through a gateway. Most are a form of artificially created life which were known as constructs in the Age of Legends, and virtually all were created by the Forsaken known as Aginor.
- Shadowspans were those souls who had been lost to the Nothing, their identities completely destroyed. They appeared either with a humanoid shape composed of inky black shadow, or as a nondescript human with no discernible facial features, just smooth featureless skin on its face. Used as spies, assassins, and saboteurs, they had no sense of self, so they could be completely suicidal and cared nothing for their own lives. If they were wounded, they bleeded black smoke, and when killed they collapsed and unraveled into incoherent shadow and drifting smoke.
- Shadowspawn are creatures like Trollocs, Darkhounds and Draghkar, twisted by the Shadow. The Three Oaths leave Aes Sedai free to use the One Power against them.
- Hanse Shadowspawn is name of a fictional character created by Andrew J. Offutt for the Thieves World anthology series, as well as the name of a novel featuring that character. He also appeared in the novel "The Shadow of Sorcery." He is a son of the Illsigi God Shalpa, which may be responsible for his skills in thievery. Hanse is regularly described in the Thieves World series as an arrogant and brash young man, with flashy clothes and overly-displayed throwing weaponry, who moves with the obvious grace of a cat without making any noise whatsoever. It is undisputed in the series that Hanse is the City of Sanctuary's best and most effective thief.

He claimed the title of Lord Shadowspawn and sought to create the Shadow Empire, and Imperial splinter faction, as the galactic government. His attacks almost brought down the New Republic, as he unified the other factions and the Imperial Remnant under him, ending the Imperial Civil War, in 12 ABY. However, he was defeated the following year by Luke Skywalker following an attack on his throne world. Originally, Shadowspawn was born on Mindor, in the Inner Rim. He was born to an aristocratic family. Finding out he was Force-sensitive, the young Shadowspawn began purchasing Sith artifacts and objects, eventually also gaining dual lightsabers. They allowed him to practice various Dark Side powers, which he mastered. From a young age, he was recognized as a Sith prodigy. Blackhole even began preparing for his death, by learning about the spirit transference technique. Because of his skills, he was noticed and brought before Palpatine, who made Shadowspawn an Emperor's Reach. He was also intelligent, being good at math, science, history, and languages (knowing Huttese, Neimoidian, and others). He was not particularly strong, but knew several forms of lightsaber combat, and owned a pair of unique lightsabers salvaged on Dromund Kaas.

It is undisputed in the series that Hanse is the City of Sanctuary's best and most effective thief. He is a close friend to Prince Kadikithis and the magician, Strick, and he also rescued the immortal mercenary, Tempus Thales, from a vivisectionist. In the second Sanctuary Series, Hanse is presented as an old man, now going by the name of "Chance." Chance walks lamely and carries a walking-stick, though it is revealed that such devices are merely a ruse covering up the legendary thief's still not inconsiderable powers. Chance befriends and takes on the solo thief "Lone" as his apprentice, Lone displaying much of Hanse's former skills and, sadly, his former arrogance and over-confidence as well. It is also the name for the malignant creations that serve the Dark One in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.
