Abraham Lincoln (born February 12, 1969) is the 45th and current President of the United States. He was born in Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky; the second child of Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Lincoln (née Hanks). In the summer of 1978, Lincoln's family moved to Springfield, Illinois. After he graduated from Lanphier High School in 1987, he went on to Loyola University Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. Lincoln graduated from Loyola in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army via the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps.

After he graduated from Lanphier High School in 1987, he went on to Loyola University Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. Lincoln graduated from Loyola in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army via the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps. While at Loyola , he decided to become an intelligence officer. Upon graduating from the Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course at the U.S. Army Intelligence Center and School, Lincoln was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood in Texas as the assistant battalion intelligence officer of the 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment. He was later assigned as a platoon leader to the 303rd Military Intelligence Battalion. Lincoln eventually rose to the position of a company executive officer. He left the U.S. Army at the rank of Captain in 1995 after four years of service and enrolled in the University of Chicago Law School. In 1998, after earning his Juris Doctor and passing the Illinois Bar Exam, Lincoln moved to Washington, D.C. and began serving as a law clerk for a judge on the United States Tax Court. In 1999, he returned to Springfield and obtained a position as a tax law associate at a local law firm. On October 3, 2002, Lincoln married the former Mary Todd; a paralegal whom he'd been dating for nearly two years. On August 1, 2003, their son, Robert, was born. A couple of weeks later, with his wife's encouragement, Lincoln decided to run for Congress. He won the Republican primary on March 16, 2004. On November 2, 2004, Lincoln was elected to the United States House of Representatives by the voters of Illinois's 18th congressional district. He was re-elected to a second term on November 7, 2006. On July 5, 2007, Lincoln announced his candidacy for the United States Senate in the 2008 election. He handily won the Republican nomination on February 5, 2008 and narrowly won the U.S. Senate seat on November 4, 2008. Lincoln was sworn in as a U.S. Senator on January 3, 2009. As a Senator, he served on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and the Senate Committee on the Budget. On November 4, 2014, Lincoln was re-elected to a second term in the U.S. Senate. On February 23, 2015, he announced that he was forming a presidential exploratory committee. Lincoln officially announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the presidency on March 23, 2015. On May 3, 2016, he became the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party after his victory in the Indiana primary and the withdrawal of the last competitors, Senator William Seward of New York and Senator Simon Cameron of Pennsylvania, from the race. On May 26, Lincoln secured his 1,238th delegate, achieving a majority of the available delegates. On July 16, 2016, he announced the selection of Senator Hannibal Hamlin of Maine as his vice-presidential running mate. On July 21, 2016, in Cleveland, Ohio, Lincoln formally accepted the Republican Party's nomination at the 2016 Republican National Convention. On Tuesday, November 8, 2016, he was elected 45th president of the United States, beating fellow Illinois native Democratic Senator Stephen A. Douglas. Lincoln received 306 votes in the Electoral College and 51.9% in the popular vote. He was inaugurated and sworn into the presidency by Chief Justice of the United States Roger B. Taney on January 20, 2017.
