They have been credited by humanity with the creation of mankind. That´s why humans have a tendency to treat them as gods and have the urge to find them once they find out about this. The name "Engineer" was given by Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway due to the lifeform being responsible for "engineering" the human race. Later, the Engineers stationed on LV-223 wanted to wipe out the human race with a biological weapon, "The Dark Liquid", but the bioplogical weapon went out of control and killed the Engineers there instead. The reason for this is unknown, but Elizabeth Shaw, with David´s help, activated one of the Engineer´s ships stationed there, left LV-223 and went to the Engineer´s homeworld to find out why, but not before leaving a warning regarding the planet first.
