| - The game is set on the planet Gaia. Princess Elise Acorn, an anthropomoprhic squirrel, visits Angel Island on a diplomatic mission. She meets Sonic, a blue hedgehog, who can run at super-sonic speeds, hence the name, and his friend miles 'Tails' Powers, a fox who can use his multiple tails to fly. The idyllic life of the Angel Islanders is shattered by Dr Eggman Robotnik, a rotund mad scientist who invades the island and kidnaps Elise. Robotnik demands that he be given the seven Chaos Emeralds in return for releasing Elise. Sonic, having fallen head-over-heels in love with the princess, decides to retrieve the seven emeralds himself so as to ensure her safe return. He is joined on his quest by Tails. However, the two run afoul of Knuckles the Echidna, the guardian of the Chaos Emeralds. Knuckles is unaware of Sonic's intentions and becomes determined to hinder his quest. Meanwhile, Elise finds out that Robotnik wants to use the Chaos Emeralds to power his super cannon, with which he will hold the world to ransom. In spite of his best efforts, Knuckle fails to stop Sonic from retrieving all seven Chaos Emeralds and he takes them to Robotnik, who is waiting on Angel Island. After gaining the emeralds, Robotnik throws Sonic into a prison cell with Elise and prepares to fire up his cannon. Elise explains Robotnik's intetions to Sonic, who becomes determined to stop him. Elsewhere on the island, Tails is found by Knuckles, but he convinces him to help him rescue Sonic. The duo infiltrate Robotnik's fortress and free Sonic and Elise. Sonic then races off to stop Robotnik. A final battle ensues between Robotnik and Sonic, during which Robotnik seemingly prevails by combining the power of the Chaos Emeralds and blasting Sonic. However, Sonic absorbs the power and transforms into Super Sonic. Robotnik falls into the cannon and Knuckles launches him off the island before Sonic destroys the cannon. With Robotnik defeated, Knuckles reclaims the Chaos Emeralds and bids Sonic farewell before disappearing. Elise and Sonic also bid each farewell before she departs from the island. Tails comforts Sonic, telling him there's plenty more fish in the sea as the camera pans over the ocean. Suddenly, Robotnik breaks the surface, coughing and spluttering about getting revenge on Sonic.
