In 1954 she became the first German lady to win the World ladies' singles title. Busch is a daughter of a German businessman. The family moved from Milano to Harlem, The Netherlands and then to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, Germany. She began skating at age four and a half years. She took ballet classes in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and was regularly coached in London. Her coach was Thea Frenssen.

The family moved from Milano to Harlem, The Netherlands and then to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, Germany. She began skating at age four and a half years. She took ballet classes in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and was regularly coached in London. Her coach was Thea Frenssen. In 1954 Gundi Busch became World champion. She finished her amateur skating career and joined the Hollywood Ice Revue. In 1955 she married a Swedish professional ice hockey player Lill-Lulle Johansson. They moved with their son Peter Lulle Johansson to Stockholm, Sweden. Busch worked there for many years as a figure skating coach, but retired from coaching in 1997.
