He played junior with the Niagara Falls Cataracts from 1926 to 1929. He turned pro with the Springfield Indians in 1929-30 and was called up to the New York Rangers after scoring 13 goals and 6 assists in 14 games with the Indians. Heximer played with Springfield for two more seasons, winning the scoring title and leading the team to a playoff championship in 1930-31. The Boston Bruins brought him up for the entire 1932-33 season but sent him down to the Boston Cubs in 1933-34. In 1934-35 the New York Americans accquired him and he played his last 17 NHL games.
