Dylan is the Gym Leader of Viridian City. He succeeded Giovanni as the newest leader. Dylan fought in a tournament to become the next Viridian City Gym Leader, defeating several other experienced trainers. With his victory in the tournament, he was crowned the new Gym Leader. Unlike Giovanni, Dylan does not focus on ground-type Pokémon, instead using flying-type Pokémon (which are immune to ground-types). He fights with six Pokémon, and is the only leader to do so (none of the other seven leaders uses more than three Pokémon). He is the toughest of the Kanto Gym Leaders because of this. He is usually the last leader that Pokémon trainers will face.

He is usually the last leader that Pokémon trainers will face. Dylan is a fierce competitor during battles. He will do anything he can to win. However, he is not very arrogant, and does not boast. He does not like to talk to his opponents until the battle is over. Once it is over, he may give tips to the opponent, even if they have beaten him. It is revealed in A Just Edge that Dylan was a former Indigo League Winner, though he failed against the Elite 4 and thus did not become the Kanto Champion. Dylan does not spend his time in the Viridian City gym. He likes to wander through Kanto, cataloguing and catching many new Pokémon. If anyone wants to battle him, they have to enter the gym and press a buzzer, which will notify Dylan that he has a new challenger. He will then ride his Pidgeot back to the gym as quickly as possible. Like Gary Oak, Dylan hopes to one day become the greatest Pokémon master. As such, he is looking for a new person to take over the Viridian City gym, so that he can go out and explore the world, catch rare Pokémon, and defeat the greatest living Pokémon trainers.
