  • Richard Réti (May 28, 1889 - June 26, 1929) was a well-respected 20th century Earth chess player, author, endgame studier. He invented the Réti Opening, which he used to defeat one of the then-world champions. Trapped on the Caeliar city-ship Axion following the destruction of Erigol and the deaths of their colleagues Sidra Valerian and Johanna Metzger, former Columbia Earth Starfleet Captain Erika Hernandez attempted to use chess as a medium to reconnect with her estranged first officer Veronica Fletcher. Fletcher initially hid the chess board, but eventually relented, and Hernandez expressed her surprise when Fletcher used the Réti Opening with the King's Indian Attack.
