A crew evaluation was a process undertaken aboard a ship or service organization to critique and reward the skills and abilities of a crew. It determined if a crew member should be promoted and/or transferred to a more suitable job. Most crew evaluations were formalized in a crew evaluation report. On Federation starships, crew evaluations were the purview of the senior command staff, usually the executive officer. Medical and psychiatric staff members, such as the chief medical officer or ship's counselor, usually participated as well.

Once every three months, the command staff aboard the USS Enterprise-D performed these evaluations. (TNG: "Man of the People" , "Lower Decks" ) Chief engineer Geordi La Forge regularly attended similar personnel reviews. (TNG: "Galaxy's Child" ) When Commander Chakotay noted certain reservations regarding Crewman Lon Suder to Captain Kathryn Janeway and Lieutenant Tuvok, Tuvok considered it odd that he had expressed none of them in his crew evaluation of Suder. Chakotay, however, responded that he didn't put hunches or bad feelings in his crew evaluations. (VOY: "Meld")
