Born in Faversham, Kent, Holmes was educated at University College, Oxford, graduating in 1862. He was ordained as a priest in 1864. | - John Garraway Holmes (1840-1904) was a Church of England clergyman who was briefly a member of the London School Board. Born in Faversham, Kent, Holmes was educated at University College, Oxford, graduating in 1862. He was ordained as a priest in 1864. In 1870 he came to London on appointment as curate of St. Mary Magdalene, Wandsworth Common. In 1883 he was appointed vicar of St Philip's, Sydenham. In 1888 he was elected to the London School Board as one of the representatives of the Greenwich Division, which included Sydenham. He was a member of the "Church Party" grouping on the board, that sought to promote the interests of Anglicans. His membership of the board was brief, however, as he moved to South Africa in the following year. In that country he held a number of ecclesiastical posts, and was Bishop of St Helena at the time of his death. Wikipedia page [1] refers.
