This game saw Rovers knocked out of the FA Cup at the first stage for the third season running, thanks to a 2–1 defeat to Conference National side Darlington. Rovers were missing club captain Stuart Campbell from their line-up due to a leg injury suffered in the previous game, the first time he had missed a match since 17 March 2009 when he was an unused substitute in a 1–1 draw with Crewe Alexandra, as well as on-loan goalkeeper Mikkel Andersen who his parent club did not want to become cup tied. The Darlington bench contained ex-Rovers man Kevin Austin, while another former Gas player, Jefferson Louis, missed the game due to being cup tied. Darlington's assistant manager, Richard Dryden, was also a Bristol Rovers player in the late 1980s.

Darlington's assistant manager, Richard Dryden, was also a Bristol Rovers player in the late 1980s. Darlington took the early advantage when Michael Brough scored in the 14th minute, but it took just three minutes for Rovers to find an equaliser through Will Hoskins. The game turned after half an hour when Hoskins was stretchered off with what appeared to be a serious leg injury, and The Pirates were unable to produce a response to Gary Smith's 57th-minute winner.
