- Johnny Cash, Lubbock Lou and His Jughuggers, Gonzo and the Chickens sang "Riders in the Sky" on The Muppet Show episode 521. The song, which is also known as "Ghost Riders in the Sky", has been recorded by numerous non-Muppet artists over the years, and was a very popular instrumental during the "surf guitar" era of the 1960s. Johnny Cash first recorded it in 1979 on his album Johnny Cash - Silver and it was one of his major hits of the 1970s. It was in fact his current hit at the time he recorded his appearance on The Muppet Show. Cash would continue to perform it live in concert for the rest of the life.

They have written and performed music for major motion pictures, including "Woody's Roundup" from Toy Story 2 and a Pixar short, For the Birds. The band has won two Grammy Awards for Best Musical Album for Children; both awards are for albums that are associated with Pixar films. Woody's Roundup: A Rootin' Tootin' Collection of Woody's Favorite Songs won the first award in 2001 and Monsters, Inc. Scream Factory Favorites won the second award in 2003. The band has performed their cover versions of two songs originally written and composed by Randy Newman: "You've Got a Friend in Me" and "If I Didn't Have You", which are included in their respective albums, along with the instrumental versions of the two songs. The background music for For the Birds (released theatrically with Monsters, Inc.) is also included in the band's "Monsters, Inc." album.
