| - The Federation of the West Indies (FWI), colloquially know as the West Indies (WI), is a sovereign state located along the Caribbean Sea. The nation includes the majority of the Antilles and a portion of the Guianas in South America. The West Indies is bordered by Brazil, Suriname, and Venezuela in South America; and having maritime borders with France, the Netherlands Antilles, and the United States. The West Indies was established in 1958 as a federation of several British colonies in the Caribbean, becoming the sixth dominion of the Commonwealth Realm (after Acadia, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Borealia). As a member of the Commonwealth Realm, Queen Elizabeth II also serves as the nation's queen. As with the majority of the New World, the population of the West Indies is a melting pot of various cultures and peoples. The majority of West Indians are the descendants of former African slaves. The second largest ancestral group are those of Indian descent. The rest of the population consists of Amerindians, Asians, Europeans. The majority of West Indians are Protestant Christians. Hindus, Muslims, and Rastafarians form the largest minorities. The official language of the West Indies is English. Alongside English, several English-based creole languages are also spoken. Throughout the region's history, agriculture formed the basis of the nation's economy. In recent years, tourism has begun to surpass agriculture as the primary economic source for the West Indies.
