She suffered a huge explosion after being hit, in which 73 sailors died, although her captain Nakamuta Kuranosuke survived. The ship was built in the Netherlands under the name Jedo as one of two ships ordered by the bakufu, the other ship being the Kanrin Maru ("Japan"), delivered in 1857 to Japan. At the same time the sister ship "Nagasaki" (later renamed Denryū Maru) was built for the Daimyō of Hizen, Nabeshima Naomasa. On 8 November 1858 the Jedo was handed over to the Japanese navy in Nagasaki and received its new name. All three ships were copies of HNM's "Bali".
