Starting out in a Minardi in 1986, Nannini suffered from a large number of retirements in two years which yielded no points for the young team. Moving to Benetton for 1989, Nannini saw more success – taking two podiums to finish 10th in the championship. With a more competitive car in 1989, Nannini inherited his first win at the end of the season, at the Japanese Grand Prix the collision of the two McLarens allowed Nannini to finish in second, eventually promoted to first after Ayrton Senna's disqualification. With a another good car for 1990, Nannini was not able to add to his victories before a helicopter accident late in the season, in which his right forearm was severed, and forced his retirement from single-seater cars. Ferrari had been interested in Nannini and honoured a 1991 test agreement, but his injury prevented him from driving for the team. __TOC__
