The absolute path is the absolute bottom of the file system. In Mac OS 9, this is indicated by a single colon ":". In Mac OS X, this is indicated by a single slash character "/". Consider the absolute path the ground floor in a building without a basement of any kind. All folders (additional floors) build upon this absolute path.
