Sonja rides the roads in Argos and encounters a were-jackal. She defeats it, but is unsettled as she comes across a caravan headed by Karanthes, whose god, Ibis, has sent Karanthes to find Sonja. The priest reveals that the jackal man was sent by the god Set, who wanted to prevent Sonja from reaching Karanthes and undertaking his quest - to recover a page from the Iron-Bound Book of Skelos from the city of Messantia. After Sonja receives a large jewel in payment, she agrees to undertake the quest, and rides for the capital of Argos. She sneaks in through the sewers, but is observed by a deformed, hooded man, who sends a group of crocodile men in after her. After a brutal battle through the sewers, she manages to defeat them all and stumbles into the chamber with the page from the spellbook
