The game was released in the United States on March 14, 2001, and in Europe on May 4th of the same year. The game features platforming-style gameplay, as well as many characters from the television series. This is the only 8-bit SpongeBob game and the only SpongeBob video game on the Game Boy Color. A sequel, SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge, was released in November 2001 for the PlayStation and Game Boy Advance.
