Since the since the secession of the States, Texas continues to maintain the second largest military in America, after that of United States. Mexico controlled the territory until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming an independent Republic. In 1845 it joined the United States as the 28th state. The state's annexation set off a chain of events that caused the Mexican–American War in 1846. Since then, however, the economy has experienced a high increase in GDP growth. Texas was caught up in the worldwide economic crisis in 1998 and the economy plunged. GDP fell 20% from spring 1998 to spring 1999, and then leveled off as analysts compared the magnitude of the downturn to the worst years of economy.
