A man named Arne Darvin was assigned to be his aide, but what Baris did not realize was that the original Darvin had been killed by the Klingon Imperial Intelligence agent Gralmek, who then assumed Darvin's identity.

| - Nilz Baris was the Federation's undersecretary in charge of agricultural affairs for the quadrant of space bordering the Klingon Empire during the 2260s. In early 2268, Baris visited Deep Space Station K-7 to take charge of the development project on Sherman's Planet, responsible for the successful transfer of the grain quadrotriticale from Earth to Sherman's Planet. On stardate 4523.3, Undersecretary Baris summoned Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise to K-7 to protect the grain through the use of a priority 1 distress call. Kirk was ordered by Starfleet Command to accommodate Baris, despite being angered at Baris' frivolous use of the alert for agriculture security, and imperious justification for it. Kirk endeavored to obey the letter of his request with a minimal effort to annoy him. That stormy relationship worsened during the stay with the stopover of a Klingon ship arrived at the station demanding shore leave privileges much to Baris' alarm and the rapid infestation of tribbles courtesy of a small-time trader, Cyrano Jones. Eventually, Kirk went out of his way to bait Baris at every turn, at one point threatening to hold him in irons if he did not shut up. When the tribbles ate most of the grain, an outraged Baris vowed to put Kirk before a board of inquiry for both the mishap and Kirk's treatment of him. However, that move was preempted when a massive die-off of tribbles alerted the crew that the grain was poisoned. Furthermore, one of the tribbles revealed that Baris' assistant Arne Darvin was responsible as a Klingon spy. As a result, Baris satisfied himself with arresting Darvin. Dabei stört ihn auch nicht, dass das ungerechtfertigte Aussenden eines Notrufs ein Vergehen gegen die Gesetze der Föderation ist. Baris verlangt von Captain Kirk das Getreide zu bewachen. Kirk, der über den unnötigen Notruf und das arrogante Auftreten Baris' erzürnt ist, stellt jedoch nur zwei Sicherheitsoffiziere dafür ab. Baris hält das für zu wenig und beschwert sich beim Oberkommando der Sternenflotte über Kirk, was zur Folge hat, dass Kirk von Admiral Fitzpatrick die Verantwortung für die Sicherheit des Getreides übertragen bekommt. Baris glaubt später durch die Manipulation Darvins, dass der Händler Cyrano Jones, der zeitgleich die Station und die Enterprise mt seinen Tribbles überschwemmt, der gesuchte klingonische Agent ist. Er verlangt von Kirk, das Getreide besser zu schützen. Als kurz darauf festgestellt wird, dass die Tribbles, von denen inzwischen 1.771.551 die Station bevölkern, das gesamte Quadrotriticale aufgefressen haben, macht Baris Kirk dafür verantwortlich. Er droht Kirk deswegen vor Gericht zu bringen. Als er dann auch noch erfährt, dass es zu einer Schlägerei zwischen den Besatzungsmitgliedern der Enterprise und denen des klingonischen Schlachtschiffs unter dem Kommando von Captain Koloth gekommen ist, ist er entsetzt, denn nach diesem diplomatischen Zwischenfall befürchtet er, dass der Sherman-Planet an die Klingonen fällt. Letztendlich kommt heraus, dass der Agent Baris' Assistent Arne Darvin ist, der in Wirklichkeit ein chirurgisch veränderter Klingone ist, und dass dieser das Getreide mit einem Virus vergiftet hat. Nun glaubt Kirk, dass es Baris statt seiner Person sein wird, der von einem Gericht zur Verantwortung gezogen werden wird. (TOS: ; DS9: ) Nilz Baris wurde von William Schallert gespielt und von Christian Marschall sowie von Wilfried Herbst (Nachsynchro DS9) synchronisiert. Im Drehbuch zur DS9-Episode wird sein Name Barris geschrieben.

Gralmek attempted to sabotage the shipment of quadrotriticale, however Gralmek was discovered by Doctor Leonard McCoy, and Baris promised Gralmek that he could arrange that the man never saw another tribble ever again. (TOS episode: "The Trouble with Tribbles"; TOS comic: "Beneath the Skin"; DS9 episode: "Trials and Tribble-ations") Baris was still alive in the 2370s and had several children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Among the latter was Karen Farris, who was killed aboard the USS Valiant in 2374. Baris later went to see Dorian Collins, the only Red Squad survivor, soon after.
