Sonic R (ソニックR Sonikku Ā?) is a racing game that was developed by Traveller's Tales and Sonic Team for the Sega Saturn and PC, the latter version being ported to the Nintendo GameCube and the PlayStation 2 in Sonic Gems Collection. It was initially released for the Sega Saturn but was later ported for the PC. Sonic R is the first appearance of the characters Metal Knuckles and Tails Doll and the first playable appearance of Eggrobo.

- Unlocked from the start are Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna and Amy Rose. Doctor Robotnik can be unlocked by winning the final course. Metal Sonic, Tails Doll, Metal Knuckles and Eggrobo can also be unlocked by satisfying certain conditions within the races. Super Sonic replaces Sonic on the roster once all 7 Chaos Emeralds are found. As well as the playable characters, a flock of Flickies are seen flying away from the course at the start of the race.
- Sonic R was a racing game released for the Sega Saturn on November 28th,1997 and for PC in 1998. It was the first true 3D Sonic game since Sonic 3D Blast as well as the first 3D Sonic racing game. This game contains 10 playable characters and 5 tracks, as well as various race types. Unlike Sonic Drift 2 before it, this game features footracing instead of kart racing. The PC version is available on Sonic Gems Collection.
