New York has the one of the world’s greatest influence in global commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. Because of this, New York City is widely known as the cultural capital of the world. It is also the headquarters of the International League New York City Office as part of the International League. The city is named after the U.S. State of New York, where it is located in. New York City is located on one of the world’s natural harbors, giving the city one of the world’s biggest and best economies in the world. The city consists of five boroughs, each of which comprises a state county. These boroughs are The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island, all officially part of a single city in 1898. During the 2012 United States Census, the city’s population was 21,104,000 people distributed over the small area, which is at least 305 sq mi (790 sq km) large. New York is the most densely populated city in the country and the 4th most populous in the world. It is also one of the most linguistically diverse cities in the world, where as many as 800 languages can be spoken there (1000 languages can be spoken in Paris). The New York City Metropolitan Area’s population is 34,854,000 in just 6720 sq mi (16,400 sq km), making it the most populous metropolitan area than any other in the nation. It is also the most populous combined statistical area in the country, having more than 36.4 million as of 2012 Census estimates. New York has the highest percentage of internet users and the largest internet presence than any other location in the world, with 98.9% of the city’s residents using the internet which register at least 7.1 billion search results as of January 2012. New York is founded in 1624, which at this time, was a trading post built by Dutch colonists, and two years later, was named New Amsterdam. However, it was surrounded by English territory, and 40 years after its founding, the city and its territories surrendered to the English without bloodshed. It was later renamed New York after King Charles II of England handed the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. Until the completion of Washington D.C., New York was the capital of the United States from 1785 to 1790. It has been the country’s largest city since 1790, attracting millions of immigrants during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, all whicharrived to the country by ship. They were all greeted by the famed Statue of Liberty, which has been the famed symbol of the United States and its democracy. The city’s numerous districts and landmarks have made it a tourist hot-spot, which attracted 100 million visitors per year. One of the districts, Times Square, nicknamed as “The Crossroads of the World”, is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway theater district, one of the world’s busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the global entertainment industry. The city also has many renowned monuments and structures, including bridges, skyscrapers, and parts. The city’s financial district, known as Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, has functioned as the financial capital of the world. It also is home to the New York Stock Exchange, the world’s largest stock exchange in terms of total market capitalization of its companies. Manhattan’s real estate market is one of the world’s largest, yet one of the most expensive in the world. New York City’s Chinatown has the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere. The New York City Subway is one of the world’s busiest rapid transit systems, which have always provided 24/7 service. Some of the country’s best colleges and universities are located in New York, including the Columbia University, the New York City University, and the Rockefeller University, which are ranked among the top 50 universities in the world.
