Cut time, also known as Alla breve, is a time signature in music with only two beats in a measure, and a quarter note only gets two counts. Cut time is represented by a vertical slash in the letter C and is simply 2/4 time, half the measure of common time. The rhythm of cut time is the same as common time but consists of a beat that is one half compared to common time. This meter is still equal to four quarter notes but the ratio of the beat in all notes are twice as faster, making quarter notes the same exact speed as eighth notes. This rhythm is primarily used in fast paced music to reduce rhythm speed proportionally.
