The Wide World is a term used in both the The Hobbit and Farmer Giles of Ham. Though the two stories are unrelated (other than both being children's stories, both set on a version of 'earth'). In Hobbit it may refer to Middle-earth outside of the Shire and east of Faerie. In Farmer Giles it appears to be the lands outside of the farmlands.
