Fistanarius, the greater balor, is a unique boss monster found in front of the Chaos Gate on the lowest level of the Caverns of Chaos. He is the last boss that most players going for a standard ending are likely to face. Fistanarius, along with his lesser balor companions, will reopen levers for the Chaos Gate that the PC closes as long as they are still alive. Since it is possible to keep the Gate closed by destroying or blocking the two levers, it is actually possible to complete the game without running into the greater balor at all.

  • Very few of these legendary opponents of law may exist. If more did exist, the powers of law would have sensed them and acted to destroy them, as the greater balor is a threat to any manifestation of law. They, like their smaller relatives, appear as humanoids cloaked in fire and shadow, but this variety is titanic in stature, capable of dwarfing the giant kings. Their true power is unknown, as many of their opponents are said to die of fear when realizing what they face, but they must be mighty in combat. Their nature makes them resistant to most magics, and so they are worthy opponents for beings of both physical and magical strengths.

Description
  • Fistanarius, the greater balor, is a unique boss monster found in front of the Chaos Gate on the lowest level of the Caverns of Chaos. Like all balors Fistanarius has strong, corrupting attacks, teleports, and can summon random monsters of appropriate danger level. His only mode of attack is melee — meaning that Archers with blessed ammo of demon or humanoid slaying should be powerful enough by such stage to deal large amounts of damage to him relatively riskfree. Non-fire magic — with enough persistence — also works on him . PCs taking him on in melee range need to take extreme care against his multiple attacks, as they are not only accurate and incredibly powerful but also highly corrupting — 3 or 4 attacks from the greater balor alone seem to be enough to 'grant' the PC one new corruption, at a point in the game where background corruption alone is a huge concern. PCs who survive his attacks may find themselves eventually being corrupted to death, if not careful. The melee approach can be made a lot easier by throwing a potion of cure corruption at him. This not only removes the corruption aspect of his attacks , it also removes his teleporting, which means some disablers can be used without the need to chase the him through all of D:50. The greater balor is still able to reopen the gate even with teleport disabled and while blinded, but under such conditions the fight is significantly easier.

Non-fire magic — with enough persistence — also works on him (despite what his monster memory description says). This not only removes the corruption aspect of his attacks (which in few rounds becomes better than drinking the potion), it also removes his teleporting, which means some disablers (like cursed potion of invisibility) can be used without the need to chase the him through all of D:50. The greater balor is still able to reopen the gate even with teleport disabled and while blinded, but under such conditions the fight is significantly easier.
