The military is under the command of the General Staff and is overseen by the Ministry of Defense. The chief of the general staff has direct control of the actions of the military, and oversees its day-to-day operations. The defense ministry is responsible mainly for providing weaponry and overseeing cooperation with foreign military forces. Both the minister of defense and chief of general staff answer to the King of Iraq. The Royal Armed Forces since their modern inception have participated in the Civil war in Iraq (2006–07) and the Second Iraqi Civil War.
