Carchost is one of the two Towers of the Teeth built by the men of Gondor for defence against the servants of the Dark Lord but later abandoned by them and then occupied by their enemies. This tower, along with Narchost, overlooks the Morannon, the Black Gate of Mordor, and is situated on one side, some say the east (or north), of Cirith Gorgor, the Haunted Pass, on a hill that is at the extreme western end of the Ered Lithui.
