Caligula was a play written by Christopher Marlowe in the 1590s. Richard Burbage played the title role at the Theatre, and William Shakespeare had a small part. Shakespeare remarked "This was the frightfullest Roman of them all." Burbage acknowledged that Caligula's more unspeakable deeds had not made it into the play, and Shakespeare marveled that Sir Edmund Tilney, the Master of the Revels, had allowed even as much as the play offered.
