abstract
  • His All Holiness Eugenius II was the Patriarch of Constantinople from 1821 to 1822. He was among the group of archbishops held hostage by Mahmud II during the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence. Little is known about Patr. Eugenius. Before his election to the Patriarchal throne he was Archbishop of Anchialos in Bulgaria. As the Greek War of Independence began in 1821 the Greek bishops, and in particular Patriarch Gregory V as ethnarch, were held responsible by Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II for not controlling the revolutionists. The hierarchs were placed under confinement by the Sultan. Patriarch Gregory was brutally treated and then hanged over the main gate of the patriarchal compound in Constantinople on April 10, 1821, Pascha night. While still a prisoner of Mahmud, Eugenius was then elected to succeed Patr. Gregory as Eugenius II. He was patriarch for about a year before he was succeeded in turn by Anthimus III in 1822.
