All clans started out with 100 points on the ladder. Clans gained at least 5 points for winning a match and lost at least 5 for losing. For beating a clan with a higher ranking, the number of points awarded was equal to 5 plus the difference between the ranks. The losing clan would lose the same amount. The clan in first place was not affected by points; only the second to fifth-ranked clans could challenge the first-ranked clan, and if they won they took first place. If a clan did not taken part in a war in 28 days, 20% of the clan's score was deducted. If a skill war was not planned within a week of the deduction, the clan was removed from the ladder altogether.

A clan was forced to take part in a war if the challenger was within 10 ranks of their position on either side, unless the clan had a war planned in the next seven days. If the clan did not respond within a week they forfeited the match, with a 5 point deduction. If the two clans could not agree on the rules of the match, a Jagex Moderator decided for them. Each war used the same rules as the Jagex Clan Cup. Clans submitted at least 5 players to square off, and the best hour of skilling was recorded for each player, the scores for each player averaged out into the clan's overall score. Each clan could choose a "home skill" for the war, and there was a Skill of the Week set by Jagex weekly. If a clan won a majority of the skills, they won the war. The skill war lasted three days and the results were posted by a Jagex Moderator. All participants needed at least three complete hours of skilling that adhered to the rules. If there were not enough hours, the clan was disqualified from the skill. Food and Summoning familiars were allowed, but players could not use any of the following: * Quest and Distractions and Diversions rewards * Lamps * Volatile and Morphic tools * Inferno adze * Lumberjack clothing * Penance horn * Runecrafting teleport tablets * Locators * Brawling gloves
