  • Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October in the United States. A town in Ohio also bears his last name. The explorer was not a known influence on Columbo, however. In Sesamstrasse episode 2335, Samson imagines to be Columbus where he discovers the potato.
  • While renowned for his discoveries, he was also a cruel man, who used American natives as slaves and, as a colonial governor, committed many atrocities. (AUDIO: Trouble in Paradise)

  • Christopher Columbus (ca. 1451-1506) was an Italian navigator widely credited with the discovery of America. Columbus gained financing for the voyage through the queen of Spain. Some time around 1492, he was also accosted by a journalistic amphibian, Kermit the Frog, who interviewed him on his plans for the voyage for a News Flash sketch on Sesame Street. Intriguingly, the Muppet Columbus claims his intent is to discover America, and not seek a spice route to the Indies as is widely accepted. In a 2006 episode of Sesamstrasse, Samson imagines that he's Columbus, and discovers the potato.
  • Columbus was born in Genoa. His origins are not a subject of debate amongst serious historians, though especially among amateur historians there is the occasional alternative origin theory. Some have pointed out he may have been Jewish, escaping the inquisition that engulfed Spain after the expulsion of the Moors. No evidence for this theory exist however. In fact, since Columbus had plenty of enemies, sooner or later one of them would have pointed out his Jewishness. Though during his lifetime he was accused of a lot of things, being Jewish was not one of them. Others have suggested he may have had Portuguese, Galician, French, Armenian or Greek origins. Coincidentally the proponents of those theories are Portuguese, Galician, French, Armenian and Greek, respectively.
  • Christopher Columbus was a famed Genoese navigator and explorer who sailed for Spain during the 15th and 16th centuries. According to Sybok, he proved his world was round rather then flat. (Star Trek V: The Final Frontier) Nora, a friend of Travis Mayweather's who resided on the ECS Horizon, compared Mayweather to Columbus and Magellan after he explained to her that the exploration feats he participated in aboard the Enterprise, which included having traveled 150 light years and visiting twenty-two inhabited worlds in an eighteen-month period. (ENT: "Horizon")
  • Christopher Columbus (circa 1451 – May 20, 1506) was a human originally from Genoa, Italy on Earth who lived during the 15th and 16th centuries. An explorer, Columbus led an expedition for the Spanish which led to the Europeans discovering new lands across the Atlantic Ocean. Captain Benjamin Sisko felt that the Cardassian people held the High Gul of the Crescent Order in the same light as humans held Columbus and George Washington in. (DS9 novel: Station Rage)
  • A famous historical figure, known as the sailor who wanted to find an easier trade route from Europe to Asia (NOT to prove the Earth was round, contrary to popular belief) only to discover the Americas during his travels. For his legacy, he was not the first European to discover the Americas , but he did leave a legacy that was worse for the American indigenous natives. In 1492, hurting for cash after defeating Muslim Granada, Ferdinand and Isabella decided to give him what he wanted (although Isabella initially turned him down). Most likely, Ferdinand didn't think he'd come back.
  • Christopher Columbus (Italian: Cristoforo Colombo, Spanish: Cristóbal Colón) (30 or 31 October 1451 - 20 May 1506) was an Italian sailor in the 15th century. Believing the Earth was smaller than it actually is, he mistakenly thought Asia could easily be reached by travelling west. He submitted a proposal for a journey to India by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean to several European monarchs and ultimately received approval, funding, and three ships from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. He did not find India (though he initially thought he did) but instead became the first European to reach the New World and establish a lasting presence. He returned on several subsequent journeys and became the first governor of Spanish colonies established there.
