The Kryptes are a group of renegade Spartans who deserted from the United Nations Space Command following the end of the Great War and attempted to establish their own independent society. Formed from a number of Spartan-III commandos, the Kryptes believed that augmented humans like the Spartans were "humanity's next step " and did not want to remain tools of the United Earth Government's military industrial complex. Although the Kryptes' attempt to build a sustainable colony was met with some success, their lack of civilian experience and military-centric upbringing led them to resort to raids on former Covenant client colonies and even piracy in order to survive. The Office of Naval Intelligence eventually brokered a deal with the Kryptes; in exchange for weapons, resources, and diplomatic immunity, the Spartan secessionists carried out plausibly deniable and often morally questionable black operations against such targets as the Insurrection, Covenant remnant, and even non-hostile objectives such as Sanghelios. Though few knew of their involvement with ONI, the Kryptes were feared for their brutal efficiency and ruthless tactics.
