He was perhaps known for working alongside Carol O'Connor as Archie Bunker's business partner Murray Klein in "Archie Bunker's Place", as well as playing the role of private investigator Milton Arbogast in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Balsam played the villian in the Joe Don Baker film Mitchell, which later become a favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode.

- Martin Balsam was the first of three actors who portrayed Dr. Rudy Wells. A well-known character actor, Balsam's previous film credits included films such as Breakfast at Tiffany's. In 1966, Balsam won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for A Thousand Clowns, and was also nominated for a 1977 Emmy for his performance in Raid on Entebbe. Although Balsam officially appeared only the one time, footage of him as Rudy Wells can be seen in the opening credits of the telefilms Wine, Women and War and The Solid Gold Kidnapping, even though Wells is played by Alan Oppenheimer in the movie. To a lesser extent, Balsam can be glimpsed throughout the series in the show intro. Born in the Bronx, Balsam participated in the drama club during high school. During World War II Balsam served in the Army Air Forces. In 1948 Balsam was selected to perform in the Actors Studio and performed several times on their television anthology series over the next few years. Balsam would go on to play roles in a number of major films and television series, including Breakfast at Tiffany's, Cape Fear, "The Man from U.N.C.L.E", and Tora! Tora! Tora! Balsam played the villian in the Joe Don Baker film Mitchell, which later become a favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode. Balsam won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1966 for his performance in A Thousand Clowns, and the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play in 1968 for You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running. Balsam died suddenly while on vacation in Rome, Italy after suffering a stroke in his hotel room. He was interred at Cedar Park Cemetery, in Emerson, New Jersey.
