Wonder Race is a Standard Game mode for Age of Empires II. The first player to build a Wonder wins, and players may not attack each other. They are also barred from creating any units that may cause indirect damage, including Petards and Mangonels. Military units are essentially not needed to operate in this game mode, with the player rather having to invest into a powerful economy, accumulate great amounts of resources, and advance through the Ages as fast as possible. When they reach the Imperial Age, they will use all available resources to build a Wonder and the first to do so, wins.

Some civilizations have distinct advantages, allowing them to operate better at Wonder Races than others, either due to economic bonuses, or others. Preferably, a good Wonder Race civilization must have the Treadmill Crane available, and/or some other advantage. These civilizations include: * Aztecs - Villagers carry +5 extra resources (this includes all 3 resources needed to build a Wonder) * Celts - Lumberjacks work 15% faster, allowing for greater accumulation of wood needed to build a Wonder. * Chinese - In spite of a handicapped start in resources (and a lack of Treadmill Crane), their extra villagers, Farm-related bonus and cheaper technologies allow them to save many resources, and invest much in economy. * Incas - Less Houses mean more wood savings, faster built Farms save time but most importantly, buildings cost -15% stone. This means that their Wonders cost 850 rather than 1000 stone. * Khmer - No set requirements means a Khmer player can completely ignore many unneeded structures, save resources and advance to the next Age easily. * Koreans - Stone miners work 20% faster, allowing for greater accumulation of stone needed to build a Wonder. * Malians - Buildings cost -15% wood (also affecting their Wonder), Gold Mine upgrades are free, and Universities work 80% faster (benefits the Treadmill Crane). * Spanish - One of the most favored civilizations in Wonder Races, thanks to the fact builders work +30% faster. Apart from building Wonders faster, this also allows them to set their infrastructure quickly and save time.
