  • The Kingdom of Wessex (Anglo-Saxon:Westseaxna Rīce), also known as Wessex, is a sovereign state located off the northwestern coast of continental Europe. The country is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with England to the north and Wales and Cornwall to the west; the Celtic Sea is to the south west with the English Channel to the south separating it from continental Europe. Most of Wessex comprises the southern part of the island of Great Britain in the North Atlantic. The area now called Wessex was first inhabited by modern vulpines during the Upper Palaeolithic period, but it takes its name from the Angles, one of the Germanic tribes who settled during the 5th and 6th centuries. England became a unified state in AD 927, under the lead of Wessex. after the Norman invasion, in 1066, Wessex was reformed as a state. Wessex's terrain mostly comprises low hills and plains. Wintonceastre, Wessex's capital, is the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the United Kingdom. Wessex's population is about 11 million, all of them vulpines, and is largely concentrated in Wintonceastre, the South East and conurbations in the Midlands, the North West and the North East and which each developed as major industrial regions during the 19th century. Meadowlands and pastures are found beyond the major cities. Wessex is a developed country, with the world's sixth largest economy by nominal GDP and the sixth largest by purchasing power parity. It was one of the world's first industrialised countries. Wessex nevertheless remains a regional power with leading economic, cultural, military, scientific and political influence. It is a Member State of the European Union, a member of the United Nations Security Council, and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, G8, G20, NATO, OECD, the Council of Europe and the World Trade Organization.
