The MSFSR then began a naval bombardment, but by 5:00 AM all the Midwayan Navy had destroyed all the ships of the MSFSR by 6:00 AM. At the same time the MSFSR deployed soldiers onto the Sand Islet City and a fierce land battle ensued. The MSFSR soldiers secured the beach quickly, but many died in strafes conducted by Midwayan fighters. The MSFSR made little advances, and by 7:00 AM the battle had become a stalemate. At 7:15 AM about 100 MSFSR soldiers attempted to desfect, the MSFSR soldiers immediately began firing on the defectors. Of the 100 defectors only 17 survived. The Midwayan forces then began a massive counterattack, both sides suffered heavy losses but of the two sides the MSFSR suffered the heavier losses. At 9:00 AM the commander of the MSFSR forces, Vladimir Kurakin, ordered the full retreat of MSFSR forces. Later that day, the 17 defectors told the government of the Union of Midway that the MSFSR had begun massive conscription, in order to compensate for their military's lack of numbers. Reportedly, any male above the age of 13 was eligible for conscription.
