The empire of Trapezunt came into existence after the Byzantine Empire was conquered in the Fourth Crusade 1204. When Constantinople fell in 1327 after a long siege to the Rum-Seljuks, many Byzantines fled to Trapezunt. Trapezunt was allied with Georgia and Armenia to defend itself, but in 1347 the army of Georgia was defeated and the southern half of Trapezunt conquered. The temporary split of the Seljuk Empire helped them to survive a bit, but in 1380, Trapezunt was finally conquered by the Seljuks.

After a Pontic Greek uprising in 1824, South Russia fought the Seljuks and made Trapezunt their protectorate. The Greek and Russian Orthodox churches started to approximate as a consequence.
