Situated on the top floor of Barnsley Central Library on Shambles Street, the department was formed in 1998, following the merger of the Archives Department and the Local Studies Library. The Local Studies Library had existed for a century, whereas the Archives Department had only been set up in 1987, following the cessation of South Yorkshire County Council. The collections of the service cover the 12th to 21st centuries and include church registers, maps, title deeds, newspapers, business records, school records, trade directories and electoral registers. The service moved into Barnsley Town Hall in 2013 to create part of the new Barnsley Museum and Archives Centre, being created via the Experience Barnsley project, and with Heritage Lottery Funding.
