Colonel Ross is the owner of the famed racehorse Silver Blaze, and appears as the client in the story of the same name. He, along with Inspector Gregory, hired Sherlock Holmes to investigate the disappearance of his horse and the murder of its trainer, John Straker. Although initially sceptical of Holmes' abilities, and concerned over the possible impact of publicity, he is eventually very impressed when Holmes solves the case.
