The CSS Bonito was a Confederate submersible commanded by Captain Hampton Ready during the Great War. During the spring of 1917, the Bonito was hunting freighters in the operational square used by the CSS Bonefish while that boat was ashore. During the Bonito's run, she encountered a convoy and sank one freighter. Unfortunately, the destroyer, USS Ericsson was able to deduce the sub's depth and successfully cripple her, forcing the damaged sub to the surface. However, it was so heavily damaged that once it breached, it quickly sank with all hands.

| - The CSS Bonito was a Confederate submersible commanded by Captain Hampton Ready during the Great War. US Navy Sailor George Enos got a quick glance at the sub's name, only getting the letters 'BON.' This lead to the mistaken belief that they had sunk the Bonefish.
