Michaels left the band in 1968 to return to his studies, a decision which contributed to H.P. Lovecraft's break-up. He eventually earned a master's degree in applied piano. He declined to join any of the subsequent "spin-off" bands formed throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He continues to work as a musician.
