His early film credits include Spawn (1997; featuring Melinda Clarke) and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001; featuring the voices of Jean Simmons and Dwight Schultz). In 2002 and 2003, Howe worked on the last two films in the blockbuster Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, as an employee of Weta Digital. Both of these films featuring John Rhys-Davies and Karl Urban (Brad Dourif was in The Two Towers but only appears in the extended cut of Return of the King). Howe spent four years as a technical director at Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI). Among the films he worked on during his time at SPI were Spider-Man 2 (2004; starring Kirsten Dunst), The Aviator (2004; written by John Logan and featuring Brent Spiner), and the Will Smith films I Am Legend (2007; featuring Gabrielle Union) and Hancock (2008).
