The BBI 103-class Charybdis was launched on July 23, 2037 under the command of Colonel Stephen G. Richey. There were fourteen other crewmembers on board for the extra-solar survey mission. With the crew in hibernation chambers, the ship travelled towards the Theta 116 system. The ship's computer woke Colonel Richey nine days before reaching Theta 116 VIII, but he let the rest of the crew sleep as part of the mission was to gather information on long-duration habitation. During the mission, the communications system malfunctioned and all attempts to repair it proved futile.
