| - The Battle of Bat'rol was one of the first clashes during the Chain of Dogs, as the flight of Fist Coltaine's 7th Army across Seven Cities from the forces of the Whirlwind came to be known. It occurred in the Vin'til Basin southwest of Hissar and Sialk and less than a league from the small village of Bat'rol from which the battle took its name. After being driven from their base at Hissar, Coltaine's 7th Army regulars, loyal Hissari auxiliaries, and Wickan troops headed southwest towards Aren, which was hundreds of leagues and several months walk away. They were accompanied by over forty thousand Malazan civilian refugees from Hissar and Sialk. High Mage Kamist Reloe attempted to destroy Coltaine, but his Odhan army was more enthusiastic than experienced. A clash of sorcery left the field covered in black, scorched scars and littered with the bodies of Hissari attackers (including children). The shattered army of the Apocalypse was forced to regroup at the Meila Oasis while Coltaine's army continued towards Dryj Spring. At Meila, the chastened Reloe awaited Sialk reinforcements, latecoming desert tribes, and word of a second Apocalypse army from the north.
