- Caltrops were effective items used by some rogues and adventurers to dissuade pursuit.
- The Caltrop (まきびし Makibishi) is a Shuriken that is introduced in Fire Emblem Fates. Apart from raising its wielder's Speed by 2, the Caltrop reduces the Speed, Defense and Resistance by a substantial amount upon each successful strike. The Caltrop does, however, induce its wielder to suffer Strength and Skill penalties post-battle. Unlike other Shuriken, the Caltrop is limited to a range of 1. It makes up for its lack of range with having the best speed, defense, and resistance debuffs in the game by a considerable margin.
- The modern name "caltrop" is derived from the Latin calcitrapa (foot-trap). The synonymous Latin word tribulus gave rise to the modern Latin name of a plant offering similar hazards to sandaled or bare feet, Tribulus terrestris (Zygophyllaceae), whose spiked seed case can injure feet and puncture tires. This plant can also be compared to the starthistle, Centaurea calcitrapa, which is sometimes called the "caltrop". A water plant with similarly-shaped spiked seeds is called the "water caltrop", Trapa natans.
- [Source] A caltrop was a type of handheld antipersonnel weapon made of sharp spikes. Used defensively, caltrops were dropped to form a field which would slow enemies and cause them to bleed. During the Iron Blockade of the Anoat sector, a young smuggler used caltrops as a means of self defense.
- A caltrop is a non-hunter trap. It requires 10 Hunter to use and is very simple to use it. Just click it to drop it on the floor, and monsters or players who run over it will get hit a 0 to 5. Wearing boots reduces the chance of getting hit by a caltrop. Caltrops can be obtained with the Smithing skill. Each iron bar produces 5 caltrops. It requires 19 Smithing to be made. Every damage caused by a caltrop adds 1 experience to your Hunter level.
- The Caltrop is a primary grenade in the Team Fortress series. When the "grenade1" key is pressed, the caltrops are primed for one second, then released. Approximately six caltrops are released at a time. If an enemy (or the person that releases them) touch a caltrop, they take damage and their max speed goes down. The speed penalty can be removed by a Medic or a Medkit. This grenade does not exist in ETF.
- Shinobi wouldn't normally scatter these randomly on the run but instead they were placed in areas where they could provide a passive defense. In ancient Japan, common footwear consisted of sandals made of straw, called zori, which offered relatively little protection against such hazards. Makibishi spines were often hooked, and occasionally grooved to allow for a light coat of poison, to increase the damage they dealt to those unfortunate enough to step on them and possibly result in death. They would also be placed under shallow waters in order to slow down samurai troops traveling through lakes and rivers.
