- Gestalts are terran ghosts, spliced with protoss parts to become a hybrid of the two races, created by experimentation on the former species by Project Gestalt – a black ops research program under the Terran Dominion. Gestalts had unspecified psionic abilities, including the ability to use psionic blades. Project leader Doctor Stanley Burgess intended to have them access the Khala and use energy shields as well. The project came to an end, with the sole existing specimen, Gestalt Zero, breaking free of his neural inhibitor and working with the protoss.

By this time, the pace of Macintosh development had produced such a proliferation of hardware configurations and hardware and software add-ons from Apple and third parties that a simple version check was no longer enough to determine the features of the system. Instead, Gestalt maintains a dynamically-extensible table of OSType selector codes. For instance, instead of checking the system version to deduce what version of the Sound Manager might be present, there is a separate Gestalt selector for directly querying the capabilities of the Sound Manager. Thus, it could be made possible for an application dependent on capabilities introduced in a newer Sound Manager to run on an older system which had the updated Sound Manager installed as an add-on, as well as on a newer system which had the new Sound Manager built-in. And of course the Sound Manager add-on could also query this Gestalt selector first to decide whether there was any point in installing itself into the current system. The value returned by querying a selector code is 32 bits whose meaning depends on the selector. Some selectors define this as a version code, while others use it as a bit mask of available capabilities. Some subsystems define both types of selectors, allowing querying of both the version number and the capabilities. Some even use a Gestalt selector to pass the address of a shared block of data, or even the address of code that could be called. Since the piece of code that installed a Gestalt selector could either install a simple static value or a callback that Gestalt would invoke every time somebody queried the selector, it was possible for the value returned to vary dynamically from call to call, to reflect information about the current state of the subsystem.

The gestalt's strategy was to delegate the breeding of the herd to one individual female, freeing the rest to become food gatherers. They developed the ability to build citadels to guard their hard-won food against other animals. Within this citadel the individuals adhere to a strict discipline and a hierarchy that is based on age and sex. Now that the Last Ice Age has passed, the gestalt has found that its evolved way of life is still very efficient and successful. Among the pachycephalosaurs the armored head developed as a display structure, particularly in the males. In the gestalt, the male still has a very specialized head, but it is not used for fighting or intimidating members of its own species. The armor has developed spines containing a lethal venom, now used when protecting the colony from predators. In times of plenty the population tends to grow too big for the colony to sustain. Small groups of adult males and females then leave to start up new colonies. Streams in the temperate regions of Eurasia may be marked by lines of the conical citadels. The nest is built and kept in repair by the females. It is a thatched structure, built of twigs and straw, usually around a sloping tree trunk over a stream. The interior is a mass of tunnels and chambers and each nest usually has the same layout.

The Dominion sought to mass produce these creatures in preparation for conflict against the zerg and protoss. They would be controlled by neural conditioning and neural inhibitors. The project came to an end, with the sole existing specimen, Gestalt Zero, breaking free of his neural inhibitor and working with the protoss.
